Perspective of science
As the intricate interactions between human beings, animals and the environment get ever more complex, I appreciate the role of preventive medicine the need for a broader perspective to health research. As a Kenyan exposed to divergent social-economic contexts of the African continent and North America, I value the need to be versatile and adaptable to address threats to livelihoods in different contexts. As such, I believe interventions should be tailored to the specific context. Implementing evidence-based interventions tailored to specific contexts is critical for cost-effectiveness and maximum benefit to communities.
As a young researcher, I have benefited from many wonderful mentors. As the adage goes, 'It takes a village to raise a child'. This statement comes to life in science and academia as more experienced minds help one navigate the world of science. I also cherish mentoring younger scientists as my way of paying it forward.
Finally, since science is not a solo sport, I greatly value collegiality. Collaborations allow for cross-pollination of ideas and synergy in skills yielding transformative outcomes. And so, I enjoy collaborations with colleagues within and outside the space of health epidemiology.
